Fire Study: Study Book 3 Review

Title: Fire Study
Series: Study Book 3
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Pages: 448
 Publisher: Mira
Publication Date: March 1, 2008
My Edition: Paperback
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Borrowed from: the Library

Summary from Amazon:
The apprenticeship is over— now the real test has begun. When word that Yelena is a Soulfinder—able to capture and release souls—spreads like wildfire, people grow uneasy. Already Yelena's unusual abilities and past have set her apart. As the Council debates Yelena's fate, she receives a disturbing message: a plot is rising against her homeland, led by a murderous sorcerer she has defeated before.…

vHonor sets Yelena on a path that will test the limits of her skills, and the hope of reuniting with her beloved spurs her onward. Her journey is fraught with allies, enemies, lovers and would-be assassins, each of questionable loyalty. Yelena will have but one chance to prove herself—and save the land she holds dear.

Review:
Fire Study was a bittersweet end to the great Study series. At first it started off a little slow, but thankfully it speed back up to the awesome action plot with kick-butt Yelena starting some more trouble. Yelena finally discovers she is a soulfinder and starts to develop more magical power which causes lots of disruption in Sitia and eventually Ixia. She faces lots of people wanting her dead causing tons of action scenes. The fantasy and magical elements in Fire Study were really interesting and fun to read about. The last 200 pages were very hard to stop reading and were filled with new and old characters.

I really like how well-written the books are and adore the characters even more! I absolutely love Valek and Yelena. They are a fun couple to read about, but so much trouble seems to follow them. The first book in the series was amazing, but the second two in the series weren't as great. They both were really good, but weren't as powerful as Poison Study. I'm actually very sad now that the series is over, but I look forward to reading the next series based off a minor character in the Study series!

Author Interview with Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus

Today, the bestselling authors of The Nanny Diaries are here for an interview! Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus have written several books for adults and recently a young adult book. Here is the interview!
------------------------------------------------

When did you two first meet?
We first caught sight of each other at the Gallatin School of NYU in the spring of 1995. We were taking a class called Gender in Performance and our classmates brought a whole bowl full of cockamamie to class discussions. We became mutually admiring  of each other’s calm logic in the face of much hysteria, but we never got up the nerve to talk to each other until we met at an ATM 80 blocks off-campus after graduation. It was fate.

What inspired you both to start writing together?
In the late 90s the internet bubble was peaking, money was falling from the sky for certain class of New Yorkers, and endless articles started appearing in publications about how hard it was for the newly rich to find good help. But, while much derided, the ‘help’ was never interviewed to give their side of the story, which we saw succinctly as, “Um, you suck to work for.”. Having been nannies for years ourselves we wanted to give the nanny the mike.

How did you come up with the plot in Dedication?
We are obsessed with heartbreak and how women overcome breakups and all the accompanying rejection and get on with their lives. At the time we started to think about it as a novel topic Usher’s album Confessions about the demise of his relationship with Chili as all over the airwaves with Maroon Fives’ Ten Songs About Jane. We became obsessed with the idea of what a day in the life for these two women must look like. How do you get over someone when their thoughts and feelings about you follow you through your day and for the rest of your life?

Are any of the characters in Dedication based off anyone you know?
It’s funny—the people who find their way from our memories into our keyboards are always so random, like the girl at the grocery checkout who might speak in a certain interesting rhythm or the dental hygienist who holds her head a certain way--and we give those attributes to our characters, but we never lift whole people the way readers might think we do. That would take all the fun out of it :)

What would you do if you were in Kate's position? Would you go back with Jake?
We like to say our heroines are all a little braver than we are--and a little more damaged. But I don’t think we could have written the story if we didn’t know the intoxication of the attention of a former rejecter. It’s hard not to go there again if that spark is still there. That pull can be really powerful. In the novel Kate is thirty, but when she gets around Jake a part of her feels sixteen again. I think we all have someone in our past who would do that to us if we got into the same room with them....

Are there any current projects you both are working on? A new YA novel?
Our next YA novel is called Over You and will be out in early 2011. And our next adult novel will be out in that fall. We are also working on adapting Dedication for the screen.

Finally, thanks for answering my questions! Is there anything else you would like to share on writing or anything else?
No, thank you for these great questions and for your interest!!!

Interview, Guest Post, and Contest with Author Lee Nichols!

Today Lee Nichols is here, and she is an Adult Romance author who has a debut YA book,  Deception, coming out this year! Below is an about me about Lee, Deception description and cover, then her guest post, followed by our interview, and finally contest information. Enjoy : )

------------------------------------------------

Lee Nichols is the author of five romantic comedies with Red Dress Ink: Tales of a Drama Queen (2004), Hand-Me-Down (2005), True Lies of a Drama Queen (2006), Wednesday Night Witches (2007) and Reconstructing Brigid (2008). This spring, Lee will be debuting on the YA shelves with the first book in her haunting paranormal trilogy, Deception ~ A Haunting Emma Novel (Bloomsbury Children’s Books, June 2010). Follow her on Twitter at LeeXNichols or Friend her on Facebook at Lee Nichols.

------------------------------------------------

I can still remember some of my favorite young adult books. Passed back and forth between friends who loved to read as much as I did. It's thrilling to me that I may encourage a young reader to love books in the way that S.E. Hinton and Judy Blume excited me. Not to mention all the authors I've forgotten, but whose stories still live on in my mind.

My goal has always been to write books that you're so content reading on a Saturday night, you don't feel like you've missed out on something better. I loved creating Emma Vaile and her ghosts and hope that readers happily lose themselves in her world for a couple of hours.

------------------------------------------------

Deception: A Haunting Emma Book One
By Lee Nichols
Release Date: June 8, 2010!
When Emma Vaile’s parents go missing while away on a mysterious business trip, she’s left all alone in her creepy old house. But her brother’s very cute best friend, Bennett Stern—Emma’s knight in J. Crew armor—arrives unexpectedly to whisk her away to New England. There, Emma settles into his family’s museum-like mansion and enrolls at an old-fashioned private school. She quickly finds friends in the popular legacy crowd at Thatcher and spends her free time crushing on Bennett. But the eerie visions she’s been hiding from everyone have gotten worse. Emma has memories of Thatcher that she can’t explain—it’s as if she’s returning home to a place she’s never been. Finally, Emma confides in Bennett and learns she is a ghostkeeper, a person who can communicate with ghosts. Bennett brought Emma to Thatcher to protect her, but now he needs her help tracking an other-worldly murderer.

A rich
New England setting filled with mystery, tradition, and prep-school intrigue make Deception the perfect choice for fans of series like Kate Brian’s Private, as well as all those paranormal fans. The shocking ending will leave readers desperate for book two.

------------------------------------------------

How did you come up with the idea for the story of Deception?
I was knocking around some ideas with my agent for an adult novel about a woman who moves into an old New England house that she soon realizes is haunted. The more I worked on the character and plot, the more I realized it was better suited for a YA novel. That I really wanted to write about a seventeen year old girl who could control ghosts. So the house is still there and so are the ghosts, but it took on a completely different nature: less gothic, more kick-butt young heroine.

How many books will be in the series?
Deception comes out this June, followed by Betrayal next winter, and I'm just starting to write the third in the Haunting Emma series which will be titled Possession.

How was writing a Young Adult book different from writing books for adults?
I don't really find it that different. I'm still building plots and characters which then lead to the settings. So while they may be at school and proms instead of work and bars, the process is very much the same. The voice came easily to me. I think inside, I'm still seventeen.

What was your favorite book when you were little? Right now?
The Gift of Magic, by Lois Duncan. It was the first book I can remember loving that hadn't been handed to me by my mother. I think parents influence children's book choices for so long, and my mother and I did not agree on what made a book fun. The Gift of Magic began my love affair with reading. Right now, I tell anyone who asks to read The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz, which funnily enough was handed to me by mother. We still have very different tastes, but this one we both loved.

What is your favorite genre to write? Read?
Right now I'm completely involved with YA books. The genre has just exploded and I think it's most exciting place to be as a reader and a writer.

Who inspired you to start writing?
My husband, Joel N. Ross, who's also a writer. He gave me the confidence to think this could be something more than a dream.

What is one or a couple things you just have to have when you are writing?
A comfortable spot. I am not a desk person. I write on the couch or the bed. It surprises me that I can write whole books that way, but I do.

Finally, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thanks for having me. It was a pleasure!

------------------------------------------------

Contest:
Dedrie and Lee have offered to give away one of Lee's older books to one of my readers, so without further ado a contest for Hand-Me-Down! Here's the description from Goodreads and the cover:

For Anne Olsen, new and improved is the only way to live. So how'd she fall for a secondhand man? Charlotte had the Malibu Barbie with a full wardrobe. Emily inherited a slightly used Barbie with two outfits and Anne was left with a one-armed, bald Barbie who enjoyed nudist colonies. It's little wonder that at twenty-nine, Anne drives a new car, eats only from freshly opened packages and thinks

After growing up in the shadows of her older sisters -- one a swimsuit model, the other a pop-feminist -- Anne's personality is one part sibling rivalry and two parts VD (stands for Vague Dissatisfaction, and yes, it itches). Now she's the self-professed underachiever in the family, determined to find happiness on her own terms. But when her sister's ex-boyfriend -- seemingly perfect, potentially interested -- reenters her life, Anne's got to ask: Could she possibly fall in love with a hand-me-down man.

Beautiful Dead Book One: Jonas - Blog Tour Review

Title: Beautiful Dead Book One: Jonas
Author: Eden Maguire
Pages: 271
 Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Publication Date: March 1, 2010
My Edition: ARC Paperback
Reading Level: Young Adult
Received From: Sourcebooks Fire

Summary from Amazon:
Not alive. Not dead. Somewhere in between lie the Beautiful Dead.

Something strange is happening at Ellerton High. Phoenix is the fourth teenager to die within a year. His street-fight stabbing follows the deaths of Jonas, Summer, and Arizona in equally strange and sudden circumstances. Rumors of ghosts and strange happenings rip through the small community as it comes to terms with shock and loss.

Darina, Phoenix's grief-stricken girlfriend, is on the verge. She can't escape her intense heartache or the impossible apparitions of those that are meant to be dead. And all the while the sound of beating wings echos inside her head...

And then one day Phoenix appears to Darina. He tells her that she must help Jonas-the first of the four to die-right the wrong linked to his death. Only with her help can Jonas finally rest in peace. Will love conquer death? And if it does, can Darina set it free?

Review:
Jonas was a intriguing, fantasy book filled with romance, action, and mystique. The story was very easy to follow, and I read it very quickly. The characters were unique, and I really liked the main character Darina. The characters could have been a little more developed and have a little more description. Darina's a troubled girl who has to mourn over her boyfriend's death, but then when she sees him and three other dead students, she feels like she's going crazy. But really, she has just been let in on a secret of the Beautiful Dead. The whole idea of the Beautiful Dead was pretty neat, and I enjoyed reading about them.

I really liked the plot and story because they were different than other fantasy books and had lots of originality. Some of the characters' names were cool and unique which was nice i.e. Darina, Phoenix, Jonas, Arizona, and ect. The end was very surprising and very action packed. I was not expecting what happened at all...lots of twists and turns. The book is pretty fast-paced, and I read it basically in one sitting. I really enjoyed the first book in the series, so I'm looking forward to reading the next book which is Beautiful Dead Book Two: Arizona.

Dedication Review

Title: Dedication
Authors: Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus
Pages: 305
 Publisher: Washington Square Press
Publication Date: March 2, 2010
My Edition: Paperback
Reading Level: Adult
Received From: Engleman & Co.

Summary from Goodreads:
Kate Hollis's ex-boyfriend's face plasters newsstands and TV, the Internet, and the multiplex. Jake Sharpe is one of the biggest recording stars on the planet, and every song he's famous for is about Kate. For over a decade his soundtrack has chased her -- from the gym to the supermarket, from the dentist's office to the bars. Now thirty-year-old Kate gets the call that Jake has finally landed back in their Vermont hometown for an MTV special. The moment she has been waiting for has arrived.

On the eve of their prom, Jake Sharpe vanished, resurfacing when his song "Losing" -- about his and Kate's first sexual experience -- shot to the top of the Billboard charts. And the hits kept coming, each more personal than the one before.

Now Kate gets her chance to confront Jake and reclaim her past. But after eleven years of enduring protracted and far-from-private heartbreak, everyone in Kate's life has a stake in how this plays out. Kate must risk betraying the friends Jake abandoned, the bandmates whose songs he plundered, and her own parents, who fear this will dredge up a shared past more painful than any of them want to acknowledge. But after getting the call in the dead of night and jumping on a plane, can she turn back now?

Newsweek dubbed The Nanny Diaries "a national phenomenon" and the New Republic proclaimed, "Thank God for Citizen Girl." Now McLaughlin and Kraus have written a poignant, humorous tale about modern celebrity obsession and coming of age during the divorce boom. With flawless depictions of the 1980s, a charismatic heroine, and their signature biting wit, the authors offer up another lively and hilarious tale of a smart young woman looking for satisfaction in the chaos of contemporary culture.

Review:
Dedication was a funny, entertaining novel about a woman who has to relive her private teenage relationship every time she hears one of her ex-boyfriend's famous songs. I really liked how the story switched from her teenage years to the current year around Christmas 2005. It was a very pleasurable book to read and was very hard to put down. I read the last 200 pages non-stop, and altogether I really liked the entire book.

I was really surprised by the ending but felt happy with her decision in the end. The characters, especially Katie (teenager name)/Kate (adult name), were great and pretty easy to relate to. It was interesting to read about Katie's and Jake's relationship through their middle school and high school years, and then find out what happens when they finally see each other again, thirteen years later.

Dedication is now my favorite Adult book by Emma and Nicola because it seemed more YA than Adult, and it was much easier to follow. The Nanny Dairies was good, but Dedication just had a little more entertainment and drama/romance to it. So far, I have enjoyed reading their books, and I especially look forward to hopefully more Young Adult books by them in the future!
